Information Lifecycle Management

Long-term management and efficient storage of company information is known as Information Lifecycle Management (ILM). Document management through the use of an Enterprise Content Management System (ECM) is called Document Lifecycle Management (DLM). New documents are constantly added to ECM systems. Although this is necessary, of course, it also tends to slow down the system and the corresponding workflows. The more data, the more difficult it becomes to manage all that information – and while ECM systems alleviate the problem, they also add to the complexity

In practice, DLM means marking documents with classification features and then storing them in an archiving system. This means that information that is no longer needed is stored in special systems. These can be special archiving solutions such as WORM disks, modern revision proof storage systems (NetApp, openAttic) or Jukeboxes. The best archiving systems are those that are based on industry standards such as XAM (eXtensible Access Method).  Long-term storage includes the original document, a PDF/A compliant copy  as well as an XML based meta-data structure.
